Pernambuco

A Rare Find for Guitar Makers

Pernambuco (Paubrasilia echinata) is a legendary tonewood, best known for its exceptional use in fine violin bows. Valued for its density, stiffness, and responsive acoustic properties, it has earned a special place in the world of musical instruments. For centuries, bow makers have sought out this remarkable wood for its ability to translate subtle movements into precise, expressive sound.

But there is something fascinating about Pernambuco beyond its celebrated role in bow making. When you look closely at the wood itself, you begin to appreciate its natural character — the warmth of its colors, the depth of its grain, and the quiet individuality that makes every piece different. It is a wood that invites curiosity, not only for what it can do acoustically, but also for what it can become in the hands of a thoughtful maker.

For guitar makers, however, the real challenge is finding Pernambuco in dimensions suitable for guitar construction. Much of the material traditionally associated with this wood is known through its use in bow making, while pieces large enough for guitar sets are exceptionally difficult to find. Discovering suitable guitar-sized stock is therefore a rare opportunity — especially for makers who enjoy exploring materials beyond the familiar choices.

The reason we rarely see Pernambuco in the world of guitar making is not a lack of potential, but rather the difficulty of finding pieces large enough for guitar construction. Its rarity and limited availability in suitable dimensions have kept this remarkable wood largely beyond the reach of many guitar makers. And perhaps that is what makes the opportunity so special. For those who appreciate rare woods and the art of instrument making, Pernambuco offers a chance to work with a small piece of musical history and give it a new voice.
